Bering Marine Corporation Deckhand Location: Western Alaska SUMMARY: Bering Marine Corporation provides charter and scheduled service throughout Alaska with its fleet of tugs and barges, landing crafts, and hovercraft. The Deckhand performs various duties aboard and during cargo loading and unloading. Bering Marine maintains a Zero Tolerance workforce. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Performs routine maintenance of vessel, deck, and cabin areas, including cleaning, painting, and minor repairs. Assists in the vessel's navigation as instructed and supervised by Captain and Mate. Assists in vessel loading and unloading. May perform galley functions such as cooking, cleaning, etc. Handles tow and vessel lines and works with other crew members to safely dock and secure the vessel. Safe use of deck machinery Ensures the safety of the vessel's crew and upholds the Company's safety policies. Participates in safety meetings and assists with JSA's and other reporting conditions. Performs other duties as instructed by Vessel Captain. Teamwork is a must. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this Job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, crew, customers, and the general public. English speaking preferred. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to use common sense and sound judgment to deal simultaneously with situations and multiple problems in a highly controlled and regulated environment. Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: Minimum Requirements Merchant Marine Document, Able Body Seaman preferred. STCW Endorsement preferred. TWIC Card required. Current CG Physical Card required. Driver’s license preferred. Passport preferred. OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Must be available to workdays, evenings, weekends, nights, or holidays and be away from home for extended periods. Must be able to work in a team environment in close quarters for extended periods. Must have good interpersonal skills and get along well with various personalities, backgrounds, etc. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and smell.
